Today, in honor of Black History month we remember Rosa Parks.  Rosa Parks helped initiate the civil rights movement in the United States when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955.  Her actions inspired the leaders of the local black community to organize the Montgomery Bus boycott which began the day Parks was convicted of violating the segregation laws.  Led by a young Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the boycott lasted more than a year and ended only when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional.  Over the next half-century, Parks became a nationally recognized symbol of dignity and strength in the struggle to end racial segregation.

In the words of Rosa Parks:  “There were times when it would have been easy to fall apart or to go in the opposite direction, but somehow I felt that if I took one more step, someone would come along to join me.”

American professional tennis player Serena Williams has won 23 Grand Slam single titles and several Olympic gold medals.

She has held the top spot in the Women’s Tennis Association numerous times over her stellar career.  Serena was born on September 26, 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan.  She began training at the age of three with her sister Venus and coached by her father Richard.  After years of training, Serena became pro in the WTA in 1995.  One year later, she graduated high school and immediately signed a huge shoe deal with Puma.  In 2002 Serena won the French Open, the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, defeating her sister Venus in the finals of each tournament.  She won her first Australian Open in 2003, making her one of only six women in the Open era to complete a career Grand Slam.  Winning all four major titles simultaneously, was a “Serena Slam” an accomplishment she cherished early on in her career.  In 2003, Serena underwent knee surgery and was faced with challenges to remain healthy over the next few years.  She struggled for a few years with injuries and loses.  She even thought about retiring, but after a life-changing trip to West Africa she was alive again.  In 2015 she won her 20th Grand Slam.

On November 16, 2017 Serena married Alexis Ohanian.  In September of 2017 they proudly welcomed their daughter Alexis Olympia.  Aside from tennis, Serena has expanded her brand into film, television, and fashion.  She has been on the cover of several magazines and has released an autobiography called “Queen of the Court,”  In 2018 she released a doc series called “Being Serena.”  Essence magazine has titled Serena as one of the most influential persons of all times largely in part for her overall career and philanthropy work with the Serena Williams Foundation.  Her foundation has provided opportunities for underprivileged youth and built schools in Africa.  Serena Williams an amazing athlete and American icon.

Black History is American History

Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961.  Barack moved around a few times when he was younger, but eventually settled back with his grandparents in Hawaii.  He had a tough time growing up without his father but knew early in life, that he must do well academically to succeed and met all of his goals.  He worked hard in school, excelled in basketball and graduated with academic honors in 1979. He later graduated from Columbia University in New York City and Harvard Law School with top academic honors.  He decided to move to Chicago where he worked as a community organizer fighting for the rights of average working people.  After spending many years working to help those less fortunate, he went on to become a Civil Rights Lawyer in the Chicago area.  This is when he met Michelle Obama, and married in 1992.  They later welcomed two daughters Malia and Sasha.  Obama’s advocacy work led  him to becoming the state Senator of Illinois.  He was a young Senator but was determined to become a prominent political figure.  In 2004, he delivered the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention.  This speech captivated many both young and old nationwide.  He was on his way to fulfill big dreams.  In 2008 with a campaign slogan of “Yes We Can,” he won his presidential bid, becoming the first African American President of the United States.  In 2012 he won again and served his second term as president.  For his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and peace with other nations, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.  Currently Barack and Michelle are venturing into the world of filmmaking and their Higher Ground Production Company has already won  an Oscar Award.  Barack Obama is a true American icon.

Maya Angelou was a civil rights activist, poet and award-winning author.  She was most known for her 1969 memoir, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” and her numerous poetry and essay collections.  She was the first African American woman to  make literary history for writing many nonfiction bestsellers.  Maya Angelou received numerous prestigious literary and humanitarian awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.  She was also known as an actress, screenwriter, dancer, poet and civil rights activist.  Maya Angelou was born April, 4, 1928 in St. Louis Missouri and had a very difficult childhood.  She experienced violence and racial prejudices throughout her life.  These experiences led her to fight for equality in America and abroad in the motherland of Africa.  Maya Angelou worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X during the Civil Rights Movement.  She also fought for the rights of women and used her writings and poems to tell their stories and express their strengths.  Maya Angelou was an acclaimed actress on Broadway and has earned a Tony Award as well as an Emmy Award.  In her later life, Angelou taught at several American Colleges and Universities.  Many have lived by her inspirational quotes and her brilliant collection of literary work.  She is loved by many for her positive message and uplifting words.  Sadly Maya Angelou died on May 28, 2014 at the age of 86.  She will always be remembered as an innovator in American History.

TOMORROW is December 7th – Perl Harbor Remembrance Day.  On December 7th 1941, the Japanese launched a surprise attack on the US Naval Base – Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.  The bombing killed more than 2,300 Americans.  It completely destroyed the American Battleship USS Arizona and capsized the USS Oklahoma.  The attack sank or beached a total of 12 ships and damaged 9 others.  160 aircrafts were destroyed and 150 others damaged.

The next day on Dec. 8, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered a speech, also known as the “Infamy Speech” informing Americans that this attack happened while the US was in the midst of talks to keep peace.  That same day, Congress made a declaration of war against the Empire of Japan and the US officially entered into World War II.

On this day of remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor, let us remember and honor the veterans who survived, and all those who lost their lives on that fateful day.

Thank you,

The History Club

VETERANS DAY is a U.S. legal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.  In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.”  Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938.  In the aftermath of World War II became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938.  In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became legally known as Veterans Day.

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day – a common misunderstanding.  Memorial Day (the fourth Monday in May) honors American service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans – living or dead but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.  On Monday November 11th, take the time to thank a Veteran for their service to our country!
